The Clarial double barns
The land owned by Chantal Drouin and Claude Bournival was originally opened by Georges Trudel, who arrived in Laverlochère in 1910 and established a farm in the early 1920s. In 1946, Victorin, Mr. Trudel’s son, took over the farm before selling it to Édouard Bournival in 1955. Two years later, Édouard Bournival transferred the ownership of the farm to his brother Sylvio.
Sylvio sold the farm in 1963 to his son Gérard and his wife Claudette Rocheleau, who are the parents of the current owner. It was at this time that the farm made a crucial shift towards dairy farming. The pig pens were transformed to accommodate calves, and the stable underwent significant changes. In the mid-1980s, as Chantal and Claude became increasingly involved in the business, they embarked on renovating the barns. An extension was built to house heifers and young bulls, and the windows were replaced with ventilation systems, among other improvements. In 1988, they officially purchased the farm and have been operating it ever since.
One of the farm’s unique features is the face-to-face arrangement of the cows in the alley. In the past, it was more practical for bringing down hay from the barn’s loft into the alley and directly caring for the cows. Usually, lactating cows face back-to-back, which saves steps for the farmers during milking.
