Plante-Marquis Double Barns

The farm located at 850 Route 101 Nord in St-Bruno-de-Guigues was cleared by Jean-Baptiste Guimond in the early 1900s. With his wife Marie-Jeanne Paquin, they had 13 children. In 1949, the farm was passed into the hands of their son Léodor after his marriage to Auréa Côté. At that time, the Guimond family practiced subsistence farming. A first barn (triangular roof) was constructed on the lot, and in the 1940s to 1950s, a second barn (French gambrel roof) was built to meet the growing family’s needs.

Around 1960-1965, the farm made a shift towards dairy farming with year-round production. At this point, the ground floor of the barn served as a stable for dairy cows, while hay and straw were stored on the second floor. Alain Guimond, Léodor’s son, recalls that the barn’s attic had a water reservoir supplied by a windmill that allowed them to pump water. Situated at such a height, the reservoir, holding approximately 2000 gallons of water, could gravity-feed the livestock’s water troughs. Among Léodor and Auréa’s seven children, none seemed interested in taking over the farm in the short term. Consequently, the couple sold their possessions in 1976 and moved to the village.

The farm was then purchased by Viateur Bégin and Denis Charette, two partners under the name Béchar, who aimed to expand their dairy operation with the addition of a new site.

In 1992, the farm was acquired by Bernard Plante and Josée Marquis, the current owners, who now run a cattle farm. The barns were converted into machinery sheds and carefully covered with metal sheets to ensure their longevity.
