The Sarrazin family is among the founding pioneers of Duhamel-Ouest. This led to several generations of Sarrazin farmers. Our story begins with Romulus Sarrazin and his wife Exérile Lefort, who decided to leave Saint-Cyrille-de-Wendover to settle on their newly acquired land in Duhamel-Ouest, which cost them 30 piastres. They raised their family of 4 children there and worked the land with sweat on their brows. Donat, born from this union, developed a taste for rural life and bought the whole property from his father in 1937, one year after marrying Jeanne d’Arc Plante.

This fertile land gave life to a second generation of Sarrazin, as 7 other children were born here. History repeated itself, and their youngest son, Réjean, bought the land from his father in 1965 to establish the third generation with his wife Carmen Garceau.

Originally a dairy farm, the land was redirected towards beef production 8 years later, as Réjean took on the management of the Coopérative de Ville-Marie, requiring him to split his time between both jobs. (excerpt from Duhamel-Ouest’s centennial book, 2011)

Mr. Sarrazin’s barns were built in four sections. The first barn was erected during the 1920s. In the 1940s, the second barn was built, along with the southern end, where the dairy was set up. It was during this construction that the stable’s orientation changed from east-west to north-south. Finally, the extension was built in 1968, three years after Réjean purchased the farm, to install a gutter chain with a piston.
