Behind every wayside cross, there lies an intention: the commemorative cross, the foundation cross, the public devotion cross, and the votive cross. The votive cross specifically represents a particular vow or favor. It is planted to request a favor or more often erected to express gratitude for a favor granted.

In Laniel, a Way of the Cross (Chemin de Croix) was created by Mr. John Dorval. This Way of the Cross is located on the mountain facing 147, Baie Dorval. It is owned by Mr. John Dorval and his partner. The place is beautifully maintained and easily accessible, even though one has to hike up the mountain for a little over 1 km.

At the entrance of the path, there is a wooden crucifix covered with beige sheet metal featuring Christ, welcoming the pilgrim. This Way of the Cross, consisting of 14 stations, was given to Mr. Dorval by a lady from Montreal who had obtained it from a church that was closing its doors. If you look under the stations of the Way of the Cross, you’ll find an older one handcrafted by Mr. Dorval himself.

Mr. Dorval created and sanded the trail and transported more than 120 tons of crushed stone. The Way of the Cross was inaugurated on August 26, 2002, by Father Michel Vézeau. During the inauguration, about a hundred pilgrims were present. Since then, it is estimated that between 30 to 50 people visit the site each year. At the top of the mountain, at the end of the 14 stations, there are three white crosses representing those of Christ and the two thieves. These crosses are trees with branches removed and painted in white. The largest (in the middle) measures 11 feet tall, while the other two are 8 and 9 feet tall. A statue of the Virgin Mary is located near the crosses.

At each station, at the foot of the crucifix at the entrance, and around the statue of the Virgin, flowers can be found. An area with tables and chairs awaits visitors for rest.
